Bjor ur-sider

The old, original cider that was brewed all across northern Europe was called “bjor” in Old Norse and “beor” in Old English. The drink was made from fermented fruit juice, often with berries and herbs, and honey was added to increase the alcohol content. Bjor was considered to be the most precious drink, and in the Edda poem Allvismål, the Norse god Thor is told by the dwarf Allvis that beer was for men, but bjor was for the gods.
