FLAVOUR WHEEL FOR NORWEGIAN CIDER
HANEN has launched a cider wheel for ordinary people. The purpose of the cider wheel is to show the diversity of Norwegian cider and help the consumer discover a richer language within the tastes and aromas of the cider.
Norwegian cider, like beer and wine and spirits, is a rich and diverse product and deserves an accessible aroma wheel that can help most people find out what a cider tastes and smells like in an entertaining and playful way. The wheel is created by Pommelier, beer and wine sommelier Hans Tryggvason, and designer June Grodatter. – We started by collecting all the aroma descriptions about Norwegian cider that we could find, from Vinmonopolet, producers and reviews. The process continued with interviewing different producers, Vinmonopolet and experts to get an understanding of production methods and raw materials. – It has been an exciting journey, and we see this wheel as version 1. We believe Norwegian cider production is ever-changing, and that there will be a lot of exciting ciders in the future that require the wheel to be updated. – We hope it can be useful and will inspire people to taste more Norwegian ciders.

How to use the cider wheel
1. Get to know the production methods
On the back of the wheel, you can find out about the production process. We have quickly explained the main features of Norwegian cider production, but keep in mind that all cider manufacturers produce their cider in their own unique way. With this wheel, we want to show that different processes contribute to giving the cider different flavours. Different apples and different fermentation and storage methods are important for the cider’s flavour and aroma.
2. Quick Analysis
We often have opinions about different products before we taste them, so we encourage everyone to taste cider blindly and let your senses lead you to a conclusion. In the centre of the wheel, we have a glass with a quick analysis. It should help you warm up your senses and make you more aware of what is in your glass.
3. Find scents and flavours
THE CIDER WHEEL CAN BE PURCHASED FOR 10 NOK PER PIECE PLUS POSTAGE.
